2024 Alberta Stick Curling Championships

The 2024 Alberta Stick Curling Championships will be held at the St. Alberta Curling Club – March 25-28, 2024.

Three divisions (Men, Women, Mixed) will be playing for the Alberta title and the opportunity to advance to the Canadian Stick Curling Championships in Toronto, Ontario April 17-23, 2024.

2023-24 Tour Results

The first Alberta Stick Curling Bonspiel was held at the Ellerslie Curling Club on Nov 4, 2023.

This was the Ron Currie Stick Bonspiel. Thanks to Tiffany Game, Manager of the Ellerslie Curling Club  for hosting this event.

Sixteen teams competed and each team played three games.  Two teams went undefeated in the event.
Al and Glenys Edwards of St. Albert beat Jeff and Sandy
Kaufman of St. Albert  in one A Final.  Bob Pisatcky and
Ken Fedoruk of Grande Prairie defeated Dale Milton and Geoff Stickle of Ellerslie in the other A final.

The St. Albert Curling Club on Nov, 12, 2023 held the second Stick Bonspiel on the Tour.

Twenty-two teams each played three games in a “stakes” spiel.  Each team started with $32.  Four teams went undefeated in the five pools and tied for 1st place with $84 each.

The four undefeated teams were

  • Randy and Ruby Olson, St. Albert
  • Tom Steele , Rod Chmiliar, St. Albert
  • Rick Jenkyns , Don Kuchelma, St. Albert
  • Greg Gross, Jamie McNamara of Leduc

The Leduc Curling Club held a “Stakes” Spiel  on Dec 2.  Randy and Ruby Olson finished first, Stan Schneider & Ken Powell finished second,  Jeff and Sandy Kaufman and Greg Gross and Al Clement tied for third place.

The Crestwood Curling Club held a pay as you win Stick Bonspiel on Dec 9th.  Rick McKague and Reg Reinhardt of the Crestwood defeated Stacy Burzminski and Irv Yaremko of St. Albert  in the A event final.  Randy and Ruby Olson and Ed Willson and Ed Cliff were the semi-finalists.

The Legal Curling Club hosted a Stick Bonspiel on Dec 28th.  Thanks to President, Norm Rivard for hosting this event.  Two teams went undefeated, Terry and Mira Fenton and Brian and Kathy Durstling. Third place was Ruby and Randy Olson and two teams tied for fourth place – Denis Fitzgerald / Frank Vollmer, and Dan Rivard / Darcy Bisson.

The final tour event was held in Grand Prairie on Jan 27. Bob Pisatcky and Ken Fedoruk of Grande Prairie defeated Mike Bain and Dennis Haugli of Grande Prairie in the final. Third place – Randy and Ruby Olson of St. Albert tied with Henry Rose and Morley Erickson of Grande Prairie.

Alberta Stick Curling Tour

Randy Olson, President of Alberta Stick Curling is proud to announce the establishment of the Alberta Stick Curling Tour.

Alberta Stick Curling Association responsibilities:

  1. Publish Bonspiel on tour event page on albertastickcurling.ca website after approval that the club will meet their responsibilities.
  2. Publish Bonspiel on Alberta Stick Curling Championship Poster to be distributed to all curling clubs in Alberta.
  3. The team with the most points on Feb 1, 2024 will receive a free entry in to the Alberta Stick Curling Championships. During our first year of operation, the Stick Curling tour needs to have a minimum of six bonspiels registered to support this free entry.  Hopefully, we will have many more.
  4. Maintain a list of teams and points awarded after each bonspiel.  Teams only need to play in one bonspiel to be on the points list.
  5. Please contact Randy Olson, President of Alberta Stick Curling Association if your club is interested in hosting a bonspiel to be registered on the Alberta Stick Curling Tour.

Hosting Club responsibilities:

  1. Bonspiel title must reference 2 person stick curling.
  2. All games in the Bonspiel must comply with Canadian Stick Curling Association rules.
  3. The bonspiel must be open to curlers from other clubs.
  4. All bonspiels must be held prior to Feb 1, 2024 to be eligible for the 2024 championships.
  5. The club must provide both names of the teams determined to be the top four spots after the bonspiel to be awarded points.
  6. All players must use a delivery stick to throw rocks in the bonspiel.

How the Points will be awarded

  1. First place – 40 points, second place – 30 points, third place 20 points, fourth place – 10 points.
  2. If teams are tied in bonspiel the points allocated with be the average of the points awarded for each place. e.  If the semi-final losers do not play, each team will be awarded 15 points.  (20 + 10) / 2 = 15.
  3. The points awarded will only be given to the full team. If the teams change partners in the next bonspiel, no individual points will be awarded.
  4. Any type of 2 person bonspiel is allowed, including stakes bonspiels.

2023 Alberta Stick Curling Championships - Feb 10-12

The  2023 Alberta Stick Curling Championships has been hosted by the Spruce Grove Curling Club. 

2023 AB Mixed Champions – Sharon Christenson, Dan Shank, Morinville presented by Randy Olson, President Alberta Stick Curling Association.

2023 AB Women Champions – Doreen Bodinsky, Elaine Meyer, Morinville presented by Randy Olson, President Alberta Stick Curling Association.

2023 AB Men Champions

Ed Willson, Tom Steele, St. Albert presented by Randy Olson, President Alberta Stick Curling Association.

Each Final Game has been Video Streamed on the Alberta Stick Curling Youtube Channel.

Each winner will be competing in the Canadian Stick Curling Championships in Nanaimo, BC, March 30-April 2, 2022.

Stick Curling Demonstration at West Ed Mall

The Curling Canada – Curling Club Championships will be held in West Edmonton Mall, Nov 21-26th, 2022.  Between the semi-final and final games on Saturday, November 26th, several sheets will be used to demonstrate curling. Included in this demonstration will be Stick Curling, Wheelchair curling, Youth curling and University curling.  

The curlers demonstrating Stick Curling will be members of the St. Albert Curling Club who have won Alberta Championships.  Brenda Eger and Barb Palmer are the 2022 Alberta Women’s champions. Bob Lee and Bob McKenzie are the 2020 Alberta Stick Champions.
